English

Introduction and Objectives: Bone tissue engineering necessitates scaffolds that balance high bioactivity with sufficient mechanical strength. Magnetic mesoporous bioactive glasses have attracted considerable attention owing to their high specific surface area, favorable cellular compatibility, and potential use in magnetic field–assisted therapies. However, their inherent brittleness limits their application in load-bearing conditions. This study aimed to develop a novel strategy for fabricating and reinforcing magnetic mesoporous bioactive glasses scaffolds while preserving their mesoporous architecture and magnetic properties.
Method: Magnetic mesoporous bioactive glasses scaffolds were fabricated via direct ink writing 3D printing, using a glass precursor sol as the binding phase. The scaffolds were subsequently coated with chitosan and a chitosan/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite. Structural, mechanical, magnetic, and biological properties were systematically characterized using standard analytical techniques.
Results: The fabricated scaffolds exhibited an amorphous structure, hierarchical porosity over 80%, and superparamagnetic behavior. Coating with chitosan and chitosan/MWCNTs increased compressive strength by approximately 67% and 100%, respectively, compared with the uncoated scaffolds, while maintaining high porosity. In addition, all scaffolds demonstrated excellent bioactivity, forming an apatite layer upon immersion in simulated body fluid. Biological evaluations revealed cell viability above 85%, favorable cell adhesion, and enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity.
Conclusion: The proposed strategy enabled the fabrication of ceramic scaffolds with hierarchical architecture, enhanced mechanical strength, favorable bioactivity, and stable magnetic properties, demonstrating high potential for application in bone regeneration.
