English

Introduction and Objectives: In this study, four color spectra (blue to red) of zinc-doped carbon quantum dots were synthesized by hydrothermal method using varying the volume, precursor ratio, synthesis time, and temperature. The effect of simultaneous doping with nitrogen and sulfur on optical properties was also investigated.
Materials and Methods: Citric acid precursors, thiourea with different molar ratios and zinc chloride were dissolved in deionized water. The reaction were carried out at 170 to 200 °C for 3 to 10 h. The samples were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, dynamic light scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Results: The results showed that changes in time, temperature, and reaction volume led to significant changes in the absorption and emission wavelengths, in which the emission shifted from the blue region to the red with increasing temperature and decreasing time. In addition, simultaneous doping of nitrogen and sulfur through thiourea along with the presence of zinc led to an increase in fluorescence intensity and improved quantum yield.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that doped carbon quantum dots with tunable optical properties in the visible range (blue to red) can be produced by simultaneously controlling the temperature, time, reaction volume, and precursor ratio in hydrothermal synthesis. High fluorescence intensity, suitable quantum yield, and significant Stokes shift make these nanoparticles promising candidates for diagnostic and bioimaging applications. However, further studies are needed to confirm their practical efficacy in vivo and in vitro.
